The Upper Murgia region

The Upper Murgia region

The Alta Murgia occupies the north-western part of the vast Murge plateau, which stretches from the Ofanto valley to the Gioia del Colle inlet, between the Fossa Bradanica and the valley depressions that lie towards the Adriatic coast.

The suggestive landscape is made up of slight undulations and gentle depressions, with superficial karst phenomena represented by the “Puli” and the “inghiottitoi”.

The most striking consequence of this phenomenology is the total disappearance of surface water, the memory of which is attested to only in the local toponymy, rich in “hydronomes” that point to the presence in ancient times of fountains, lakes, streams and marshes, as well as the numerous erosion furrows which constitute a fairly dense network that often reaches the sea.

Because of its strategic position, both with respect to the sea and the mountains, the Murgia plateau is affected by climatic conditions favourable to vegetation.

The harshness and appearance, in some places, makes it resemble the moon; the Alta Murgia is a National Park established in 2004 and includes, in addition to its natural beauty, also mines, castles, necropolises and local museums.
