Oil production

The production of Apulia oil has grown and the region is now in first position in terms of average production at national level: in recent years about 1,885,495 litres a year have been produced.

Apulia – with 37% – is the biggest Italian producer and, in southern Italy, no one comes near to this production percentage.

The region does in fact have the highest number of olive oil producers (267,203), followed by Sicily (196,352), Calabria (136,016) and Campania (112,093).

The Italian olive oil heritage is estimated at 150 million plants distributed over a surface area of 1,165,458 ha.

Olives are grown in 18 regions out of 20, mainly in the south and islands, especially Apulia, Calabria, Sicily, Basilicata and Sardinia, which account for 88% of national production; this figure amounts to 500,000 tonnes of oil/year.
